Salt Mining At Crater Lake Bunyampaka 1/2

Updated: Aug 10, 2023

I will always remember the Queen Elizabeth National Park for many reasons. One of them is the beauty of its dramatic scenery and its abundant wildlife (even if lions are drastically disappearing, poisoned by humans -but that’s another subject).

You can’t imagine how happy I felt when I discovered this savanna heaven after weeks spent in rainforests. The bush called me for 2 weeks where, during the night, predators were my only visitors.

Not far from the camp, I decided to walk through the bush (with a ranger) to reach lake Bunyampaka. It’s one of many soda crater lakes found in the park, here in Uganda.

Despite its unreal colours and shapes, I will especially keep the local community in my heart. All ages and both genders are working hard to harvest salt from evaporation pans every single day.

Spending time with them has been one other powerful and intense experience. ‘What a life’ I kept saying in my head. My whole body was already itching, burning and turning white when they couldn’t stop laughing and talking football.

And tonight, I miss them. Deeply.
