Around the campfire, I sit between Shaun and Aunt. The sky is invaded by billions of stars that could easily represent all these strangers I met on the road.
They cared for me from the first second we met, they trusted me, they helped me blindly, they loved me with a fearless heart, and they strengthened my fragile faith in humanity.
These absolute strangers became my family. My African family. And the list is endless.
But it seems there is always a little painful part in the story, especially when you decide to live a marginal life far away from the place which built who you are.
My eyes opened and few months ago while about to ship Rafiki and to leave my Dear Africa. ‘Did your parents come and visit you?’, many people asked me recently. And every time, I feel a pain in my chest. ‘No’.
Life has been hard on my family and traveling on my own has become a shelter: the only safe place to be who I am and to live, fully. The only place where I’m finally good enough and not left apart.
When I see that most of you -following the solo expedition- are the age of my parents, supporting and encouraging me with passion, it warms my heart.
I sometimes wish they can say these words and understand my world. I wish I will be able to describe them my passion and unbreakable love for Africa. I wish I will be strong to explain why I switched the powerful sound of a lion roaring over the beautiful call to prayer…
Anyway, my first night wild camping in the Middle East was unforgettable. The heat woke me up to a place surprisingly looking like Namibia. The sky was clear and my heart as well. I’m so impatient to see more of this oh so unique part of the world!
