I often receive this message of surprise since I announced the mileage of the solo expedition so far. Indeed, I’ve reached 65,000km since I left France in January 2022.
I just want to say a few things regarding this matter:
1/ this is not a race; it’s the expedition of my dreams and I go at my own pace, adding 0s to the mileage is not the objective at all, opening my eyes is.
2/ to take the time; I quit my speeding life in Europe to stop feeling pressured and in the rush, so there is no way to reproduce it during the adventure of my life. I want to feel, to live, to understand. You can’t experience deeply when moving fast (and to be honest, I missed so much even going ‘slow’).
3/ don’t forget that I drove in Africa the first 20 months of the expedition; the roads there are not the comfortable ones you find elsewhere like in Europe or in the Middle East (wild animals, potholes, NO roads, and many other challenges).
4/ why should this number matter? It does not. I do monitor the mileage for my records and to give you a more precise idea of what Rafiki covered so far, but that’s all.
Again: it doesn’t matter how much we drive, or how wild, crazy, beautiful, lazy, bold, provocative, irrational we can be, as long as we do everything with our heart. Only this should matter.
