On Letting Women Breathe.

Although I’m a woman, this subject is normally something I do not master. I’m not a feminist, I’m simply happy to be a woman. And I’m fascinated about women around the world, coming from complete different horizons.

I heard so many things about Saudi women (and I actually still hear so much about muslim women, in general).

I have already met many Saudi women since I’ve arrived in KSA. It’s probably easier to get a chance to approach them as a female.

They taught me so much. So many things that we still sadly like to ignore in certain parts of the world…

The truth is: I have never seen so many beautiful, elegant, and proud women than in Saudi. Their situation has beautifully changed so much the past 7 years. It’s a fact.

But that strong love they have for their country is fascinating. They are proud to be Saudi, they are proud to be free and independent, they are proud to study, to work, to drive (even though most still prefer to get a driver), to travel, to play sport, and they are willing to show the rest of the world!

Also, they do not dress the same even though wearing the famous abaya is still very common (and beautiful I think!). You can wear the abaya the way you like: you can open it, you can also uncover your head if you want, you don’t have to wear a niqab, and you don’t even have to wear an abaya anymore…

The women I met wear whatever THEY like to wear. And this is their choice.

It’s cultural! And we shouldn’t judge the way they dress because we shouldn’t judge a culture, nor a religion.

Most Saudi men still wear the thawb (white Arabic dress) with the shemagh (white and red scarf on the head). And they are all so class as well!

My friend Mariam offered me one of her abayas when I was visiting them in Jeddah. I wear it when I feel it and I will keep it with me forever. I feel so elegant when I wear it, I feel also protected in a way. This is my personal experience, obviously.

Wherever in the world, whatever women choose to wear, a mini skirt, a niqab, or loose trousers, we should let them breathe. Because outfits are not dangerous, prejudices and fears are.
