In Real Time: I Have Malaria

Updated: Aug 1, 2023

First, I have to tell you something: I do not post stories in real time for safety reasons.

I actually started to post in real time but it became stressful when people stopped me on the road a few times. They recognised Rafiki either when it was parked on parking lots, or when I was driving, or even at campings! It’s super nice but it made me think twice. While the majority of people is kind, some others can have bad intentions and I obviously wanted to limit the risks. I thus decided to post with cautious.

It surely generates many frustrations. For instance, every time you see me arriving at a new place, you give me so many recommendations and tips that I cannot use because I left this place weeks ago already. Because you are all so generous with me, trying your best to help as much as you can, I feel you concerned about my adventures and I feel very blessed for that. Thank you a thousand times.

But again, my safety is what matters most even if I end up feeling frustrated. It will pass.

Yesterday, in real time, I arrived in one of my favourite countries in Africa. But I didn’t feel well, at all. I started to feel weak, I had shaking chills, strong headache, my stomach was painful, and I spent most of the night locked in the toilets of the camping. I couldn’t sleep and this morning I felt terrible. While on the phone with my mum, I decided to do the Malaria rapid auto test (I bought it when I was in Zambia last July). 25 minutes later, I was diagnosed with severe malaria.

I thus started the Coartem medication with 2 pills per day. Today is the first day and I spent it sleeping. I still can’t eat because it makes me wanna vomit. The camping staff is very dedicated though and keeps checking on me every hour. They are adorable and it really comforts me.

And despite the storm outside, I go back to sleep in the tent and I'll keep you posted.
