Impressions Of Kruger National Park

Back in 2020, when I was overlanding South Africa for the first time. I decided to avoid Kruger National Park and to explore Hluhluwe game reserve instead.

Reviews about Kruger are very mixed. Some are addicted to the famous park while others very disappointed.

I can understand the addiction: so much wildlife, and the diversity of the landscape is mind blowing.

But I can also understand why it can be disappointing: so many tourists, everywhere, and it gets easily loud and packed on the road.

I’m going to give you my personal opinion about Kruger. I repeat: it’s based on a personal experience.

The South part of the park from where I entered -Malelane gate- to Tshokwane or even Satara camp gate, is definitely something I will never do again. It was so frustrating. So many cars (self-drives and safari cars) everywhere, driving terrible (fast & way too close to the animals). I couldn’t even enjoy predators sightings since 15 of these cars parked right next to Rafiki! And twice, when I told safari car drivers that they were having a dangerous behaviour instead of being a good example, they literally insulted me.

Yes, you have many predators, especially between Skukuza and Satara, and it’s amazing. But if it’s only to take pictures just to take pictures, I prefer to tell you what’s really going on behind the camera.

However, when you drive further North -I exited at Punda Maria gate- spectacular experiences are guaranteed. But you need to be patient. You get to see less wildlife, and way less predators. But when you do, it’s unforgettable. You’re alone, and the landscapes are divine.

In terms of camping, I personally love the bush camps. I spent one night in one of the main camps, Skukuza, but I hated it, extremely busy, no intimacy, very loud, trash on the ground, with stores and else. But the bush camps -in the North part- are amazing experiences! I can recommend the 2 I did: Balule and Tsendze.

The North part of Kruger is a treasure. Absolute treasure. You will never forget your stay there. I promise you.
