I Might Arrive In Africa Sooner Than Expected: Here What Happened

Updated: Aug 10, 2023

When I decided to start the solo expedition a month ago (already!), I knew I would have to face challenges. However, the expedition has been smooth and very much enjoyable so far.

I’m currently busy falling in love with Turkey, and especially with its fascinating and adorable people. There is so much to learn from this country, and obviously, there is so much to explore. In many ways, Turkey’s history is that of mankind.

The next step was to slowly cross Turkey towards Iran where I ship my car to Dubai. And from the UAE to finally reach Oman where I’ll have to ship Rafiki to Kenya.

I’m in contact with some people both in the overlanding and ferry industries to stay updated. Two days ago, I was informed that there are no good ferry options anymore (for both shippings).

Some of my friends were wondering why I haven’t booked my ferry yet, hopefully they understand now.

When I got the info I was on my way to meet up with Gozde again. I told her I had to find a backup solution before heading too far. Fortunately, I know a guy who works in the overlanding industry here in Turkey (thanks to my friend Anton from SA).

This guy has a solution. He knows the Turkish ferry industry very well, as well as reliable people. There are freight ferries every 2 weeks between Turkey and South Africa and there would be an opportunity to ship Rafiki, exceptionally. The shipping takes an average of 25 days -time for me to fly to SA and to wait for Rafiki to arrive…

Today, I’m still waiting for him to confirm the ferry departure date he mentioned -which is happening in the next few weeks.

This new route implies I won’t overland the Middle East anymore. I accept it because I know I’ll do it one day anyway. This also means I might be back to Africa sooner than expected. I don’t want to celebrate yet because nothing in this world is certain anymore. But let’s trust life.
