I received many messages wondering why I’m wearing a headscarf in Oman.
A few people shared their own travel experiences around the Sultanate of Oman with me, and insisted on the headscarf not being compulsory.
Yes, it’s not an obligation to wear a headscarf as a woman in the country (except when visiting a mosque obviously), and there is no pressure from the locals about this matter.
Although I’m a non-muslim woman and perfectly aware that wearing a headscarf is not an obligation, I do want to wear one when I feel it.
And no, I do not receive any pressure from anybody. This is my choice to wear it, especially when I drive through remote villages, when people are less used to women without it.
And also, I think a headscarf is beautiful. I actually brought a few from past travels that I’m excited to wear, finally.
I’m proud to wear one, to adapt, to respect, and to understand this fascinating country better (because I also notice that when you wear one, locals are delighted and more open to talk).
Again, please note that this is a personal thought from my very own experience.
If you are a woman, traveling in Oman, please keep 2 things in mind: you don’t have to wear a headscarf, and! this country is amazingly safe.
Hope you enjoy my adventures across the Sultanate!
