2 Crazy Secrets On How I Saved Money...Because No, I Never Won The Lottery!

Updated: Jul 27, 2023

Despite a few posts I wrote about how I fund the solo expedition, I keep receiving questions about this matter. And again, I understand your curiosity since it’s not something ‘common’. Overlanding has a cost, yes, and I do think it’s easier to financially assume when from Europe than from Africa. Let’s be honest once for all.

I’m from Europe but I’m not rich there. But I was able to save money (starting with 5€ per month) since many years. I own nothing, no flat, no house, no investment. When I decided to drive back to Africa, I sold my furniture, and a few decoration stuff.

First secret There is something only my family and my friends knew. To save money even more, I refused to pay for the subway in London (where I was based) and walked (or run) EVERY SINGLE DAY for 2H30 to go to work! 1H15 each way. I could save around £200 per month!! And…I did this for 6 years! My friends must be laughing now remembering this. But I was so motivated and nothing could stop me.

Second secret When I decided to go back to Africa, I told my boss straight away. I’ve been working with Mr K. for almost 13 years, he always been a spiritual dad to me and supported this choice even if sad to see me leaving…

He authorised me to leave my flat in London to save money on rent and to go back to live with my parents in France. Once a week, he paid me the Eurostar to go back to London for a day or 2. And my wonderful friends hosted me. It was intense, I was very tired but I didn’t care. My call for Africa was stronger than anything.

Every night (when at my parents) and every weekend, I worked on Rafiki and on preparing the solo expedition.

The only lottery I won is the one of my heart and childhood desires. Because I will never let adulthood sabotaging my dreams. And when I have something in mind, I will fight for it, trust me.
